The New Republic Takes Its First Steps - November 2023

Parlement

30 November 2023: It’s been two years since Barbados renounced its status as a parliamentary monarchy and became a Republic. Has anything really changed? Not at first glance. But Barbadians are basically redefining their identity, asserting their African ancestry to a greater extent while not rejecting the strong British influence. And isn't it this dual heritage that defines the people of the Caribbean?

Leaving the British Crown also means assuming full responsibility, redefining oneself as a Barbadian and not as a subject of another entity. It requires that Barbados forge new relationships with partners other than the UK for greater economic and financial independence, and that it makes its voice heard on the international stage. These are the stakes as Barbados proclaims itself a Republic. They are also the first steps of this small island in its new life, with its bold ambition of playing in the big leagues. And what are two years?

But let’s listen to the analyses of Barbadians in this BBC documentary made by a Barbadian in search of her identity, between her homeland and Great Britain, where she grew up. What a pleasure to hear eminent experts such as Professor Don Marshall, a specialist in international political economy, and the great historian, Professor Pedro Welch, speak on the subject, after having had the privilege of benefiting from their brilliant presentations during the Caribbean Culture and English courses I organized in Barbados in 2018, 2019 and 2023!
