Leandro Soto - September 2023

Yanique Soto

Looking for culture and lively debate in Barbados? Then, check out the activities organized by the various departments of The University of the West Indies (UWI) - Cave Hill Campus in the university's art and exhibition center, the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.

Among the high-quality events I had the pleasure of attending pre-Covid, was a literary conference on the great Barbadian poet Kamau Brathwaite, a Jamaican dance performance by Company Dance Theatre Jamaica, and the African Film Festival.

This year, thanks to my friend Yanique Hume, choreographer, fabulous teacher of African religions and traditions and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at the university's Cave Hill Campus, my vacation was enhanced by a presentation on the Cuban artist Leandro Soto. The occasion was the opening of an exhibition of works by this painter, who had lived in Barbados for many years. The artist's deep philosophical and existential reflections behind these paintings were revealed, as presenters led participants on a spellbinding metaphysical journey.

As someone who is immersed in the field of languages, I was intrigued by one of his questions, "Is it language that shapes thought, or is it the other way around?”
